As a birth and postpartum doula, a question I oftentimes get asked is, "Do you have any suggestions for what I should put on my baby registry?" And my answer is always "yes!" Back in 2019, I actually created a list of my top ten products for moms and their newborns! If you haven’t had the chance to read it yet, you can here.
I am currently 22 weeks pregnant and I recently started creating my own baby registry! In doing so, I realized that I have a lot more I would include on that original list of my favorite products. Working as a postpartum doula throughout the last 2 years has enabled me the opportunity to get an inside-look into what products are truly helpful for parents throughout the day-to-day of life with an infant.
I also want to preface this post by saying: by no means am I saying that you need every single item on this list. No way! These are simply suggestions, and the things I have personally seen in action as a doula the last couple of years. More often than not, less is more when it comes to babies - and investing in support - like birth or postpartum doula services, chiropractic care, prenatal massage, nutrition through meal services, and nursing essentials - instead of materialistic items, can truly make your postpartum experience so much smoother.

For Mom
Birth/Postpartum Doula Support - Of course, I had to include doula support at the top of this list! 😚 Here are some of the things that birth doulas can help with: emotional reinforcement and educational support during pregnancy, breathing techniques and soothing physical touch like counter-pressure and massage during labor, and informational and emotional support for the husbands and partners of the birthing woman. Studies have revealed that having a doula as a member of the birth team can decrease the overall cesarean rate by 50%, the length of labor by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%. Prenatal Massage - Most pregnant mamas could use a relaxing prenatal massage at some point during her pregnancy. Massages during any trimester can help increase blood flow and circulation, reduce stress and anxiety, and relieve swollen joints and achy muscles. Medela Electric Breast Pump - The Medela Double Electric Breast Pump worked really well for me with my firstborn, I exclusively pumped for 7 months and it withstood all of my late-night pumping sessions and back and forth trips on the subway in New York City. This particular pump is great because it uses settings that mimic your baby's natural sucking rhythms and comes with a cooler bag and a battery back for pumping on the go. Initially, I thought having a separate drying rack for our son was not necessary. His stuff could just go on our family drying rack, right?! The Tripp Traps can be used once baby starts eating at the table with a 5-point-safety harness. Once they outgrow the baby set, the back and foot support can be adjusted and removed to accommodate your growing child.
Gear & Travel
Nuna Pipa Infant Car Seat - When it comes to carseats, I have always chosen the Nuna brand for a number of reasons - like the fact that they use a steel-reinforced stability leg that reduces force in the event of a front impact crash, has a five-point safety harness to keep our little ones in place, and utilizes flame resistant materials and side impact protection. The Pipa Infant seat comes with a removable headrest, harness cover, and crotch cover - all of which are machine washable in the event of spit ups or the inevitable blowouts. And, my personal favorite? The Pipa weighs only 8 pounds, which makes for easier transfers from the car to the stroller or home. (It is recommended that this car seat only be used for babies up to 32 pounds.)
Nuna Rava Car Seat - If you choose to forego using an infant car seat, the Nuna Rava can accommodate newborns rear-facing as small as 5 pounds, and grow with your forward-facing child until they are 65 pounds. The infant head and body inserts are removable, so it grows with baby. The Rava offers 2 additional inches of legroom for rear-facing children, and extra support for forward-facing riders. All of the materials are machine washable. This is the carseat my son is currently using as an almost four year old, and I plan to use it until he reaches the maximum weight limit of 65 pounds.
Ergo 360 All-Position Baby Carrier (for Newborn to Toddler) - Babywearing has been shown to have many benefits for both infants and the carrying parent. A good quality baby carrier can be SO helpful during those first few months, as it allows mom and baby to bond while simultaneously giving mom her hands and freedom back. I have used the Ergo 360 in my own home as well as with clients' babies, and feel it is one of the best and easiest to use on the market.
Babyzen YOYO2 Stroller - This stroller is lightweight, compact, and customizable as it grows with your child. It folds SO easily and is incredible for travel. You can purchase additional attachments for the stroller, like the bassinet, toddler board, car seat adapters, cup holder, or rain cover.
Babyzen YOYO2 Car Seat Adaptors - If you plan to use an infant car seat, I always recommend utilizing one that will adapt to your stroller system. The Babyzen YoYo stroller is compatible with a number of different carseats on the market, like: the Nuna infant car seats, the Maxi Cosi car seats, Cybex cars seats (excluding the Cybex Cloud Q, and the Clek Liing car seat. All you need in order to attach your car seat to your stroller is these adaptors!
Car Mirror - For the first few years of your baby's life, it is recommended that they are rear-facing when riding in the backseat of the car. Attaching a car mirror to a headrest in the backseat of your car will keep your baby in sight at all times, giving you peace of mind as you drive. Lovevery Playgym - This is truly the holy grail of playmats for babies. As a lover of all things Montessori, I wanted to help foster my son’s development from infancy. Cloth and Fold-Out Books - My son LOVED to be read to when he was a baby - the sound of my voice seemed to calm him and his eyes often widened when I showed him the pictures. In those early months, reading together teaches your baby about communication and increases the chances that parents will continue reading to baby as they continue to grow. Cloth books that are machine washable and board books that can be easily wiped are great for newborns to babies up to 1 year, because, let's be honest - babies love to put EVERYTHING in their mouths!

Baby Footed Pajamas with Mitten Cuffs - Footie pajamas are typically the #1 choice among parents for their newborns because they ensure baby will stay warm all night long. If you can find footed pajamas with mitten cuffs - snag them! Having your newborn's hands protected during the first few months can prevent them from accidentally scratching their face - a common complaint among new moms and dads.
Love to Dream Swaddle - I know there may be some mixed opinions about swaddling out there, but I don’t think I would have gotten more than an hour of uninterrupted sleep at a time without it when my first son was an infant. In the hospital, the nurses would swaddle him perfectly in a muslin blanket, and still to this day I have no idea how they got it to stay so well. I was so happy I had brought my velcro swaddle to the hospital with me, because I could not get him back in as well as they could. Yet, when it came to those middle of the night diaper changes, the velcro swaddle proved to be too loud. And, around a month old, my son started to refuse having his arms down by his side, so I knew it was time to start researching arms up swaddles.
